Hi there! I’m Taylor Burr, and I currently have the privilege of being the sports reporter and weekend anchor at Gainesville’s very own TV20. If you’d asked me years ago about my dream job, I’d have said something like, “I just want to cover sports.” Little did I know that as a Gator, I’d get to live that dream by covering Florida sports in the heart of it all.
I graduated from the University of Florida in May 2023, and within weeks, I landed my first gig with WCJB. Over the past two years, I’ve had a front-row seat to some incredible sports moments. From the Gator football team’s inspiring turnaround under Billy Napier, to covering the Gators’ gymnastics team’s remarkable championship run, to baseball and softball making historic College World Series appearances, I’ve been immersed in the excitement of Gator Nation. It’s been a whirlwind, but what truly excites me is that this journey in sports is just getting started.
Along the way, I’ve also fallen in love with high school sports, covering powerhouse teams like Hawthorne’s back-to-back state championships and the Williston boys’ basketball team claiming their second title. High school sports reporting has taught me the importance of having a connection with the community and learning the traditions of each school and the athletic history each one has. North Central Florida has produced numerous championship teams ranging in all sports that I have gotten the opportunity to cover.
During my time at TV20, I’ve gained hands-on experience in all facets of broadcast journalism. I’ve done live shots, filmed games, written articles for the web, and anchored sports segments—each of which has expanded my skills and sharpened my storytelling ability. I’ve learned the value of being a versatile reporter, prepared for anything that might come my way on the job.
I even had the opportunity to contribute to our station’s in-depth hurricane coverage. As Florida is no stranger to storms, being able to help provide timely, reliable information to our community during those critical moments was a responsibility I took to heart.
One segment that is especially near and dear to my heart is the Scholar Athlete packages I conduct each and every week. There’s nothing more gratifying than sitting down with high school athletes and hearing their stories. The passion and drive they bring to the table always inspires me, and I feel privileged to help share their journeys. Some athletes have opened up about their hardships in life, others have shared their big dreams of playing at the next level, and some simply talk about their love for the game itself. It always amazes me how much I learn from these young athletes—their resilience, their dreams, and their ability to balance academics with athletics. I’m constantly reminded of how powerful sports are in shaping young lives, and I strive to bring these stories to life through the lens of my camera and my sports reporting skills.
Sports have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Growing up with two brothers, a passionate sports family, and a dad who’s been a key part of the sports media world, I knew from an early age that I wanted to follow in those footsteps. My dad worked on national platforms like SportCenter, NBC Sports, and Fox Sports, and I’ve always admired his work ethic and dedication. Watching women like Erin Andrews, Bonnie Bernstein, and Hannah Storm made me realize I could do this too—and by the time I hit eighth grade, I was already writing “broadcaster” in my yearbook.
Soccer was my sport of choice growing up, and I played competitively for years. But when I reached college, I knew my playing days were coming to a close. That’s when I decided to channel all my love for the game—and sports in general—into broadcasting. Little did I know, this path would lead me to so many exciting opportunities.
One of the most formative experiences was working as a sideline reporter at the Girls and Boys NB3JGNC tournament, an experience that solidified my passion for live sports reporting. There’s nothing like the adrenaline of being on live television, capturing raw emotion, and connecting with athletes in the moments that matter most. Working alongside legends like Notah Begay, Tiger Woods, and others, I saw firsthand the power of sports to inspire and unite.
As I continue to grow in my career, I’m fueled by one simple goal: to use sports as a way to bring people together. There’s something special about the emotional connection fans share with their teams, and it’s that connection I aim to capture in my reporting. Whether it’s celebrating a victory, honoring an athlete’s perseverance, or telling the stories that often go untold, I want to be a part of it.
I’m incredibly grateful for the experiences I’ve had so far and excited for what the future holds. The journey is just beginning, and I can’t wait to see where it takes me next.
I am a hard worker, and I know my ceiling for improvement is high. I have the drive and ambition to be the best I can be, and I’m always willing to learn and grow. With each new experience, I strive to continue improving—because I believe the best is yet to come.
